Sports in Pakistan – A beacon of light

July 10th, 2017 Arsheel Raja Sports 0 comments 18009

Pakistan has been a victim of terrorism and extremism for the past decade, foreign intervention into state policies and roles of non-state actors have only weakened the foundations of this nation negatively impacting the socioeconomic dimensions. The state of always being on the verge of death has led the citizens towards the path of strong determination, resolution, and willingness to contribute in any aspect towards the society. With every terrorist attack, a sense of patriotism was instilled among the people to help themselves against the extremist elements. Even the smallest of achievement as a nation was transformed into humongous celebrations.

The last time Pakistan’s cricket ground experienced the arrival of foreign players was back in 2009 when terrorists attacked the SriLankan cricket team, closing doors for international cricket in this land. Every team refused to come to Pakistan as if the grounds had land dynamites installed.

The valor and resilience of Pakistani people and improved law and enforcement conditions in recent years have led to the development of Pakistan in different fields particularly sports where once again people are hoping that Pakistan will become a land for organizing international events.

Just 2 months back, the first ever Pro Wrestling event was held in Pakistan where international wrestlers like Carlito, Badshah Khan, and Wade Barrett participated in the event. The shows were complete sold-outs and around 25 international wrestlers from 20 different countries expressed their willingness to come back to Pakistan again and wrestle in such events. The shows were held in major cities like Karachi and Lahore. The events were brilliantly organized and amazingly managed.

Pakistan’s cricket team which was ranked 8th in the ICC ODI ranking won the Champions Trophy 2017 which came as a shock to the entire world. The newly formed team led by Captain Sarfaraz did poorly in the first match against India and as usual, the people of Pakistan did not expect much from their team to avoid any disappointments. However, in an amazing twist of fate, Pakistan defeated SouthAfrice, SriLanka, and England to reach the finals where once again the arch enemies of the subcontinent met, India and Pakistan. The youngsters were batting well and the bowling arsenal was well equipped, a perfect Pakistani team was built. The final match was won by the young Pakistani side defeating the experienced Indian side by 180 runs. Pakistani team bought the Champions trophy and a source of happiness home for the people of Pakistan.

The recent event that is a dream come true for most of the Pakistani football fans is the arrival of Ronaldinho and Ryan Giggs in Pakistan along with many other renowned footballers for playing exhibition football matches in the country. Ronaldinho along with many renowned international footballers including Ryan Giggs, Roberto Carlos, Nicolas Anelka, Luis Boa Morte, George Boateng and David James played in front of a capacity crowd at Karachi’s National Hockey Stadium. The match was a delightful experience for the youth of Karachi. Ronaldinho’s team defeated Ryan Giggs’s team by 2-1 leading the 7-exhibition match series.
