OnePlus might be stealing users’ data

October 13th, 2017 Arsheel Raja Uncategorized 0 comments 132

The growing competition in the smartphone market has led to the entry of several local brands like Oppo, OnePlus, and Rivo. These relatively small brands are not only giving tough cost-based competition to high-end smartphones but also allow customers to use the dual camera, bezel-less screen, and other advanced features within their affordability range.

These small brands are striving every moment to replicate features from premium phones like Pixel, iPhone, and Galaxy series at a price that is luring for the consumers. The question is there is an opportunity cost for everything involved when making a decision, so are users compromising on something for an affordable phone that allows them to utilize the useful features? Security analysts and cyber researchers have come up with reports that OnePlus phones might be stealing users’ personal data without their consent which is an ethical lapse plus pertains to a criminal offense.

The security analysts have discovered that the OnePlus phones have been observed to reroute data to a susceptible “opne.oneplus.net’ which is a server owned by OnePlus. The data pertinent to IMEI and IMSI were being transferred without the users’ request or approval which was suspicious.

Upon inquiry, OnePlus assured that the data of users were protected by the company and there is no need to worry about.

However, there are ways that the users can secure their data against any foreign intervention by simply joining the user experience program under advanced setting which would help disable the Amazon’s stream containing analytics information.

As technological advancements are made in the industry, we see growing concerns of people related to data erosion, cybersecurity, and protection of personal data. Cybersecurity is a concern that will always remain until the time technology is evolving and scientific advancements are being made. The process goes hand in hand.
