What Does This Study Reveal?
A new study which has been conducted by the University of Iowa’s researchers has come to the conclusion that skipping breakfast can up your risk of cardiovascular problems. This new research work has been published in the Journal of American College of Cardiology. Accordingly, not starting the day with breakfast can increase the risk of death due to cardiovascular disease by 87% compared to those who have breakfast regularly.
Breakfast is definitely the most important meal of the day and what you eat does determine your health in many ways. The author of this study, Wei Bao said that most studies focus on what you should be eating for breakfast rather than how meals must be organized while this one is the first that links cardiovascular death to skipping breakfast.
For the purpose of this study, researchers analyzed the data of 6,550 people from the annual Nation Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. All these people were in the age bracket of 40 to 75 from 1988 to 1994. These people were questioned about the regularity with which they ate breakfast and it was found that 5% didn’t eat breakfast, 11% said they rarely did, 25% said they ate it sometimes while 59% said that they had breakfast on a daily basis.
Taking several factors into account, the researchers found that those who didn’t ever consume breakfast were at an 87% risk of death by cardiovascular disease. Other large studies also show a link between skipping breakfast and complications like diabetes type 2, hypertension, obesity, and more. Basically, breakfast is necessary to break the fast that the body keeps at night when you are asleep. It kickstarts metabolic activity and provides energy that lasts the whole day.
The moral of this research which says that missing breakfast daily can lead to an increased risk of death by cardiovascular disease is simple – start your day with a nutrient-enriched healthy meal.
