In recent months, France has been a victim of several terrorist attacks, ranging from ammunition strike on Paris police in April to the melee-attack in front of Notre-Dame de Paris. According to security agencies, the penetration of ISIS in different parts of Europe has resulted in the instability of the region. On Sunday, 2nd of July, two hooded men parked their Renault Clio outside the mosque in southeast France and as soon as the prayers ended, the Muslims were welcomed outside the mosque with bullets being fired at them from a handgun and a shotgun used by the unknown attackers as per an eyewitness. The witness stated that a black Renault car was parked outside the mosque at around 22:30 local time which carried four passengers, once the worshippers began to depart, two hooded men who were seated back left the car and started firing which caused a chaos as people were appalled and dismayed to face such unexpected circumstances.
No one was seriously injured except 8 people including a 7-year-old girl who was lightly wounded. The wounded included a family of four and four individuals who suffered minor injuries outside the mosque. According to law and enforcement sources, only 2 out of the 8 injured Muslims were sent to a nearby hospital for further medical evaluation.
The irony of this incident lies in the initial reports which blatantly quote the prosecutor’s office saying that the attack on Mosque was not a terrorist attack, but rather a skirmish between youngsters of the neighboring areas. The prosecutor said.”From what we know this evening, the mosque was not targeted. The fact that it happened in the street of the religious establishment was unconnected with it,”
The Muslim community has faced several attacks on Mosques, but no act of crime has ever been categorized as terrorism. Just 4 days prior to the incident, a man allegedly suffering from schizophrenia tried to enter the vicinity of Creteil mosque by thrashing all the barriers and road stoppers. Though no injuries resulted from the act, the suspected driver has repeatedly changed his statements regarding his association with jihadist organizations operating all over France.
Police continue to collect and collate all the pertinent information from worshippers and other eyewitnesses of the heinous crime that happened on Sunday night. The two hooded shooters are still on run. The investigation has led to the arrest of the individual who tried to drive a car through the street barracks towards the mosque in Creteil on Thursday. The Paris police commissioner has laid great emphasis on the significance of protecting the rights of minority groups living and ensuring that complete freedom under the light of law has been granted for practicing any religion.
Since 2015, France has experienced 239 atrocities due to terrorist attacks. France is now recognized as a high-security zone area and is constituted by authorities to remain under a state of emergency. The issue of terrorism is not ephemeral, it has started to raise people’s concerns regarding the security and protection of their lives.
