We’re promised that tap water in the United States is safe but is it really? Despite the Drinking Water Act being in place, it has been proved that the water you drink contains so many more contaminants than those that are regulated under the act.
In a 2015 study conducted by Maura Allaire who is water economist, it was found that more than 17,900 water systems in the States were getting water quality that violated the law. The toxic particles still found in water included lead, nitrates, arsenic as well as coliform bacteria among others. These harmful microbes can cause stomach flus, cancers, neurological disorders, etc.
This brings to attention the need to install water filters to protect our health. However, research reveals that there is another step as well which can be taken to protect the cells from the damaging contaminants found in tap water.
Accordingly, adding antioxidants to your diet is a great way to reduce health risks raised by harmful toxins such as hexavalent chromium. Compounds found in green tea have been found to be helpful at combating the damaging impacts of contaminants on cells.
What Did This Research Reveal?
This latest study which was exhibited at the 2019 Experimental Biology meeting found that two antioxidants which can be found in green tea and lower the damage caused by hexavalent chromium which happens to be a contaminant that has the ability to cause cancer. This particular toxin enters our tap water through industrial waste.
For the purpose of the study, scientists involved exposed human cells to various concentrations of hexavalent chromium. It was noted that damage starting to kick in at 200ppb or higher. However, this harm was combated entirely by the addition of vitamin C at 10ppm and through EGCG at 15ppm. While vitamin C can be found in many foods, EGCG is the chief antioxidant in green tea.
This shows that apart from the many existing benefits which are offered by green tea, the beverage can also protect your cells from damage-causing contaminants commonly found in tap water. For those who’d like a recap, green tea prevents mental decline owing to its antioxidant army and improves cognitive working, memory and mood.
It also contains compounds that can trigger metabolism for faster fat burning along with suppressing the appetite and saving the health of the heart. Since the drink can improve energy levels as well, it can also enable one to perform exercise better. Moreover, it reduces the risk of diabetes and certain cancers by normalizing blood sugar and preventing oxidative stress respectively.
Green tea packs a bunch of benefits for health and now research has given us one more reason to give this antioxidant-enriched beverage more attention. As per a new study, the harmful effects of some tap water contaminants, hexavalent chromium to be particular, can be combated by vitamin C and EGCG, two compounds which are both found in green tea.
