On Thursday, Spain is going to celebrate its National Day by the activities and festivities organized after the military parade. It must be remembered that Spain is going through the worst of political tension due to the recent referendum held by activists of Catalonia. The political chaos has been rising day by day particularly after the proclamation of independence by Catalonian rebellions who have based their decision on the basis of referendum’s results.
Mariano Rajoy, the Prime Minister of Spain, has followed the political chaos very closely in recent times and the decision of suspending any claims of independence has given more media exposure to this issue. The denial of such information by a high designation member of a nation reflects that gravity of the issue.
On Wednesday, Mariano Rajoy called an immediate meeting of the cabinet to deal with the matters related to intervening directly in Catalonia through state instruments. This decision had the consent of all the cabinet members. Despite the unanimous support towards this decision, it is surprising that the parliament was not asked to address the issue where all the representative would have given a much more transparent and bias-free solution to the issue of independence.
In the constitution of Spain, the Article 155 clearly elucidates that the state has the right to directly intervene in the matters of different parts of the country if a need to restore peace requires direct intervention.
A deadline of 16th October has been given by Premier Mariano Rajoy to the authorities of Catalonia for clarifying their situation and stance in front of the public of Spain so that this political chaos comes to an end. It has been categorically stated by Rajoy that Puigdemont’s demands for further negotiations will not be entertained in the future as they are mere ‘delaying tactics’.
Mariano Rajoy is in a strong position when it comes to this matter because the opposition parties are bolstering the government’s stance against Catalonia’s separatist objectives. Socialist Pedro Sánchez came out in the support of Prime Minister and stated,
We also need Mr Puigdemont to make it clear, in no uncertain terms, what happened in parliament yesterday,
The situation is no more obscure and things are quite clear, there is Catalonia that is pressurizing the state for ultimate autonomy in its internal and external matters whereas other parts of Spain want the uniformity of nation without any attempts of separation.
