The group of 5 countries namely India, China, Russia, South Africa and Brazil finally met this morning to discuss significant issues concerning the security of Asian region. The alliance of 5 countries is called BRICS due to their initials.
Prime Minister Modi and Indian diplomats are celebrating the joint statement of BRICS conference as their victory on the international level unaware of the fact that China just played its cards smartly by taking Pakistan into confidence and then releasing a statement that gave an impression of a win-win situation.
The key elements of this conference include the naming of terrorist organizations like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Muhammad as trouble makers and declaring an urge to stop the assistance towards such organizations. This declaration is not something new, back in 2016, in the Heart of Asia declaration conference, similar statements were made and this conference is just a mere repetition of words.
The declaration is seen as a direct attack on the sovereignty and integrity of Pakistan to which the country’s political and foreign office gave a reconciliatory remark by stating that Pakistan is also affected by the terrorist activities taking place in the region. The official statement by Islamabad said,
Many terrorist groups based in the region, including in Afghanistan, such as the TTP and its associates like JuA have been responsible for extreme acts of violence against Pakistani people. We are deeply concerned at the presence of groups like Daesh, ETIM and IMU in the ungoverned spaces in Afghanistan as they pose a threat to peace and security in the region. Pakistan also remains concerned at the rise of extremist ideologies and intolerance in the region encouraging social stratification and systematic targeting of minorities,
Indian ministers stated that during the meeting held between Modi and Xi, the matters related to terrorism or issues related to Pakistan weren’t brought directly into discussion though both the leaders agreed that “collective cooperation” is the need of time to resolve the menace of extremism in the region.
The reason for the establishment of BRICS is yet vague, while some policymakers elucidate that the purpose of this coalition is to show the growing power of emerging countries though, in recent times, Russia is facing economic problems that eventually led to negative economic growth. India has been named as the most corrupt country in Asia according to a recent study published by Transparency International. Similarly, the Chinese economy is also not in its perfect shape because this quarter, the growth has been relatively lower. Other countries that participated in this conference were Egypt, Thailand, Mexico, and Kenya were called because of close association with India.
