According to different media sources, Islamic State claimed responsibility for an attack on Iraq embassy in Kabul. Two members of the terrorist organization tried to enter the premises on embassy building and started open firing towards the diplomatic block rocking the entire city of Kabul.
Initially, a car bomb took place, which was followed by continuous heavy firing. As the news was sensitive and chaotic, no initial statements were made by any stakeholders. After a thorough evaluation of the place where this incident took place, the Afghan police released its official statement. According to witnesses, the incident prolonged for more than 30 mins but no one could testify the incident with authenticity because the area was isolated by law and enforcement agencies to prevent locals from getting injured.
According to the official statement released by Afghan police, the 2 men tried to blow the embassy’s entry gate with a car blast but failed to do so as the intensity of the blast couldn’t damage the gate. As the terrorists couldn’t trespass the premises, they started to fire towards the embassy.
The Interior Ministry of Afghanistan tried to abate the mayhem by stating that no human atrocities resulted from the terrorist attack and the Iraqi diplomats and ambassadors were safe and sent to a secure place. The Interior Minister spokesperson also stated that according to the initial investigation, it has been found that there were 3 terrorists who tried to break into the embassy.
According to a local policeman who refused to express his identity stated that initially the firing was heavy but within intervals it would subside. However, after an hour, another blast took place which is yet to be investigated for its causes. The blast covered the city of Kabul into black clouds as if the wrath of nature has been unleashed.
According to the local media agencies, at least 2 Afghan police officers lost their lives during the terrorist attack. If we have a look at the location of Iraqi embassy, we would notice that the location is crowded and surrounded by markets which makes it vulnerable to such attacks. The embassy is in Shahre-e-Noh. While the “green zone” in Kabul is far from Iraq’s embassy, it was extremely difficult for the local forces to evacuate the area and take control of the situation.
This painful incident takes place after the suicide attack on government workers in Kabul that took place last week killing 35 people. The recent unrest and unstable conditions in Kabul have raised questions on the security policies and conditions of Afghanistan and role of America in this political swamp. The world seems confuse about Afghanistan as several diplomatic and armed initiatives have failed to create any impact in recent years. America has accepted on several occasions that they couldn’t get success on the battlegrounds of Afghanistan as they expected.
