Women's basketball ends Chattanooga's 11 game winning streak in upset victory
After undergoing a rough January, losing six of nine games, the Furman women's basketball team looked to start off the month of February on a high note. Losses in two of three have dropped the Paladins to a 12-12 record, however, and threaten the team's chance at a winning season.
On Feb. 4, Furman traveled to North Carolina to take on the Elon Phoenix, a crucial contest between two teams neck-and-neck in the SoCon standings. The Paladins were unable to overcome Elon star Ali Ford's 26 points, however, and struggled in the second half en route to a 76-58 defeat.
Two days later, Furman returned to the friendly confines of Timmons Arena to face Chattanooga, a team near the top of the Southern Conference and owners of an 11-game winning streak against Furman, dating back to 2002. The women rose to the challenge, playing a phenomenal second half to seal a 75-61 upset win.
"That was probably the most complete game we've played all year," said Carson after the victory. "We have been on such a roller coaster lately, but tonight we put it together."
A home contest against Western Carolina on Monday was, unfortunately, a roller coaster game that ended with a 51-48 loss in overtime. Although Western took a 29-17 lead into halftime, Furman outscored the Catamounts in the second half 27-15 to tie the game at 44 at the end of regulation. The Paladins could not contain Western's Kalia'Shea Menendez's in overtime, however, and came up short.
Furman's next game is at home against Samford on Saturday. Come support the Paladins!
