Ye Olde Homecoming Court

Lords and Ladies of Furman University, visiting alumni from far away lands, and the people of TR.: The classes of Furman University have spoken via mass email and chosen their representatives for Homecoming court.

The Queen and King, selected from the senior class nominations, will be crowned during the halftime ceremony of the greatest game in all the Land -- football -- on the Twenty-second Day of October in the Year of our Lord two thousand ten.

Yet, now, it becometh mine honour to present to you Furman's 2010 Homecoming Court.

Ladies in Waiting

Betsy Lyde, the freshman class representative, is a biology major from Coppell, Texas.

Her favorite superhero: "Batman (of course!)," she says.

Her favorite thing about Furman is her residence hall. Betsy says, "The girls and my hall are so sweet and hilarious - they can make you smile from a mile away. Our RA and FRAD are also the greatest. It is never boring at Chi Bay (Chiles Base)."

Kendall Milano, the Sophomore class representative, is an art major from Dallas, Texas

Her favorite superhero is Captain Obvious.

Kendall's favorite thiings about Furman include the Dining Hall's frozen yogurt and heath bar, late nights in the library and art building, walking around the lake, and the people.

Perrin Thompson, the junior class representative, is an Education major from Richmond, VA.

Perrin says her favorite superhero is, "Superman, no doubt. I mean, have you seen Tom Wellings in Smallville?"

What is Perrins' favorite thing about Furman? Well, if you give her a 75-word limit, she includes: "Incredible, encouraging people. Beautiful campus. Belltower. KD. Education classes. O-staff. Walks around the lake. The pretty sunset behind the soccer field. Christmas music in the DH. My awesome apartment. Purple and white. Paladins. Tailgates. Fall colors. RUF. Carnivals. Fountains. O-week every year. Relay for Life. Homecoming (of course!). Downtown Greenville. Needtobreathe. DH cookies. The rose garden." But Perrin says she likes, "most of all, the unbelievable, amazing, life long friendships."

Heiress Presumptive - Senior Women

Ali Boyd is from Columbia, SC.

Major: Political Science with Poverty and Latin American studies concentrations.

Ali's favorite superhero is Subcomandante Marcos (Zapatistas).

Her favorite thing about Furman are the many resources students can utilize.

"We have a wide range of opportunities to engage in - from hosting CLPs, involvement in extra curricular activities, Furman Advantage grants, and conference attendance. In particular, I am a proponent of the study abroad programs in the Global South (the developing world). The structure of the program allows for increased autonomy and mobility resulting in visits to 3-4 countries and credit for four classes," Ali said.

Kathleen Hsu is from Birmingham, AL.

Her major: Political Science and Asian Studies double major.

Her favorite superhero is Carol Daniels and her Favorite thing about Furman is the Greek Life.

Christina Jade Peters is from Norcross, GA. But she says, "you can call it The 'Cross.'"

Her Major: Communications Studies.

For a superhero, Christina says, "If I could be a superhero I'd have to go with Mulan... don't let her fool you... she looks like a sweet girl, but she's pretty incredible. Anyone that can defeat an entire army is a superhero in my book."

Christina's favorite thing about Furman: "I love Furman because you can get away with saying FU and the campus is nice."

Meredith Rissler is a biology major from Louisville, Ky.

Her favorite superhero is Superman. "Clark Kent is awesome," Meredith said. At Furman, Meredith loves how you can go anywhere on campus and see a friendly face. She says, "I love how the people here are just so nice and welcoming that anyone can feel at home."

Kimberly Spatola is from Louisville, KY.

Her Major: ICP - Nutrition Major

Harry Potter is her favorite superhero.

Kimberly's favorite thing about Furman is its size. The community is, she says, "ideal for getting involved in many different ways, while still being able to focus on your studies. Being involved at Furman has been a large factor in making my college years worthwhile and enjoyable."

Senior Men

Jonathan Cannito is an economics major from Charlotte, NC.

His favorite superhero: "Batman due to the brilliance and ingenuity needed to come up with all of the gadgets and vehicles, with Green Lantern as a close second."

Jonathan says his favorite thing about Furman has been "the experience of making life-long friends, knowing that he'll always have someone to talk to and enjoy a conversation with."

Christopher Huey is from Spartanburg, SC.

He is a history and comm. studies double major

His favorite superhero is Superman

Christopher says, "One of my favorite things about Furman is the intramural program. I really enjoy competing in sports and it is a great outlet to get some exercise and play sports with your friends."

David Wantland is from Dallas, TX.

Major: French

Dave's Favorite Superhero is Cyclops. Why? "Because I always wished that I could shoot lasers out of my eyes. And, according to Wikipedia, he has an uncanny sense of trigonometry, which seems nice," Dave says.

His favorite thing about Furman: "The homogeneity...... kidding. Umm. I like that my teachers know me, have expectations of me, but also enjoy interacting with me (and other students, presumably) outside of the classroom. They seem truly committed."

Hunter Weber is a political science major from Birmingham, AL.

Minerva is his favorite superhero.

Hunter says, "My favorite thing about Furman would have to be the size of the Furman community. Furman has such a small-town feel and I'm fortunate to see and converse with my friends and classmates everyday."
